An exceptional Grand Tour souvenir in the form of a painted miniature copy of Raphael's famed self portrait, rendered on porcelain and framed in an elaborately carved and gilded timber frame. The porcelain plaque retains to the rear an original retailing label and has an impressed maker's mark relating to the manufacturer of the panel. The portrait has not been signed, however would likely have been produced for the tourist trade and specifically for those on their 'Grand Tour'. The elaborately carved gilt timber frame is in remarkable condition for its age with only a few small losses commensurate with age. Produced during the 19th century it is likely this piece originates from Florence where the original portrait resides at the Uffizi Gallery. The miniature is in lovely condition with only a slight chip to the rear of the porcelain (not visible to the front), however due to its age it could benefit from the support of a modern acrylic display stand.
