A fine example of plique-a-jour enamelling on this Russian gilt silver spoon.
Plique-à-jour is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. This particular spoon is a rare survivor, with many plique-a-jour pieces damaged during their lifespan.
