This charming Edwardian ring is in the form of a serpent crafted from 18 karat yellow gold and set with an Old European cut diamond. The ring which has a hallmark for manufacture in Chester is assayed for 1917, which technically is after the end of the Edwardian period, but this ring is certainly still very much Edwardian in its appearance. The centre of the serpent's head is set with a single Old European Cut diamond and whilst the ring is well crafted the maker is unknown. At some stage in the ring's life it has been enlarged in size, however this has been done extremely well and from the outside the jeweller has managed to recreate the three 'rings' that create the serpent's body. It is thought that Queen Victoria popularised serpent rings after receiving one from her husband Prince Albert, which was said to symbolise eternal love, wisdom and commitment. Being of such a generous size this ring is best suited as a ring for a man, but could easily be worn by a ladies who take a larger ring size. A really beautiful example of an English serpent ring in lovely condition.

Ring size - 66/X

Marked - 'crown' assay for English gold, 'R' date mark for 1917, shield for 'Chester', '18' for gold purity & '572' likely a pattern number

Total weight of piece - 9 grams
