We examine the joinery — dovetail construction, the method and age of mortise and tenon joints, the presence of hand-cut versus machine-cut elements — alongside the timber species and ageing, the character of any veneer or inlay work, and the period-appropriateness of hardware. Replacement hardware or later alterations are noted clearly in our assessment.

Most pieces can be used as found, though we recommend allowing a piece to acclimatise to its new environment before heavy use, particularly if it has moved between significantly different climates. Drawers that are stiff may ease with acclimatisation. We are happy to advise on any preparation specific to a piece.

Minor adjustments — such as replacing missing shelf pins or fitting new locks — can typically be carried out without compromising a piece. More significant alterations are generally not advisable, as they affect both the integrity and the value of the cabinet. We will always give an honest assessment of what is and is not appropriate.

Keep pieces away from direct heat and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting, timber movement, and fading. Clean surfaces with a lightly dampened cloth and an appropriate furniture wax or polish for the timber type. Avoid water pooling near feet and bases.
