Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

Can antique lamps be rewired for safe use in Australia?

Yes. Most antique lamps can be rewired to Australian electrical standards by a qualified electrician familiar with period fittings. We recommend rewiring any antique lamp before use, and we can advise on appropriate electricians and fittings that are sympathetic to the period of the piece.

How is the authenticity of antique lamp bases and shades assessed?

We examine the construction and casting quality of metal bases, the character of any patina, the marks and signatures of known makers, and — for art glass shades — the quality of the glass, the depth of the colour, and the consistency of any leading or painted decoration. Reproduction shades on genuine bases, or genuine shades on later bases, are identified and documented.

Are replacement shades available for antique lamps?

In some cases, period-appropriate replacement shades can be sourced or commissioned. This is a specialist task and depends on the type and period of the lamp. We are happy to discuss options for any piece in the collection and to assist with sourcing where possible.

How should antique lamps and light fittings be cared for?

Dust regularly with a soft brush or cloth, taking care around any art glass or enamel elements. Keep metal bases away from moisture to prevent patina disruption. For bronze pieces, avoid polishing unless advised — the patina is part of the character and value of the piece and should not be removed. We are happy to advise on care specific to any lamp in the collection.
