Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How is the period authenticity of an antique mirror assessed?

We examine the frame construction and gilding method, the character of any carved or applied decoration, and — where original glass survives — the quality and character of the plate. Antique mirror glass has a distinctive surface quality, slight distortion, and depth of reflection that differs markedly from modern float glass. The presence of original glass is noted clearly and is considered a significant feature of any piece.

Is antique mirror glass safe and functional?

Yes. Antique mirror glass, while softer and more reflective in character than modern glass, is functional for everyday use. It should be handled with the same care as any period glass, and we recommend professional installation for larger pieces to ensure safe mounting.

Can antique mirror frames be restored or regilded?

Yes — reglazing and regilding are established conservation practices, and many antique mirrors in the collection have benefited from skilled restoration work. We document any restoration clearly, and we can recommend specialist gilders and mirror conservators for pieces that require further work after purchase.

How should antique mirrors be maintained?

Clean the glass with a soft, lightly dampened cloth — avoid spraying cleaning products directly onto the glass, as moisture ingress behind the plate can cause foxing over time. Dust frames gently with a soft brush rather than a cloth, which can catch on gilding or carved detail. Avoid hanging mirrors in rooms with significant humidity fluctuation.
