Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How do you verify that pieces in a set are original to each other?

We assess consistency across all pieces in a group — matching hallmarks and assay dates, the same hand in any engraving, consistent stone quality and cut, and identical or closely matched construction methods. Where components from a set have been separated and re-assembled, we document this clearly and do not present re-assembled groups as original parures without disclosure.

What is the difference between a parure and a demi-parure?

A parure is a full matched suite of jewellery — typically necklace, earrings, brooch, and bracelet, sometimes with additional pieces. A demi-parure is a partial suite, usually two or three matched pieces. Both are significant finds in antique collecting; complete parures are particularly rare, as individual pieces from a set are often separated over generations.

Can additional pieces be added to an existing set?

In some cases, period-appropriate pieces that closely match an existing set can be identified and sourced. This is a specialist task that requires careful matching of stones, metal, and construction. We are happy to discuss sourcing requests of this kind — it is one of the services we offer to collectors building or completing a collection.

How should antique jewellery sets be stored?

Sets should ideally be stored together in a single case or box to keep the pieces associated and to prevent separation over time. Individual pieces within the set should still be kept from direct contact with each other to prevent scratching. We recommend a lined, compartmented case and are happy to advise on appropriate storage options.
