Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How is antique seating assessed for period authenticity?

We examine the frame construction — the joinery method, the timber species and ageing, the profile of legs and rails, and the character of any carving or inlay work. Upholstery is often a later addition, and we assess frames independently of covering. Where original upholstery or fabric survives, this is noted as a significant feature of the piece.

Can antique seating be reupholstered?

Yes, and in many cases reupholstering in a period-appropriate fabric significantly enhances a piece. We can recommend upholsterers experienced in working with antique frames, and we will advise on appropriate fabric choices that respect the period and character of the piece. We always recommend that the frame is assessed structurally before any upholstery work is commissioned.

Is antique seating comfortable and practical for everyday use?

Many pieces are — Georgian and Victorian chairs were designed for daily use, and well-constructed frames remain sound for generations. Seat heights and depths differ from modern furniture, which is worth considering before purchase. We are always happy to discuss the practical dimensions and use of any specific piece.

How should antique frames be maintained?

Wax or polish the exposed timber components periodically with an appropriate product for the timber type. Avoid placing chairs near heat sources or in direct sunlight, which dries out joints and causes movement over time. Loose joints should be attended to promptly by a furniture conservator to prevent further damage. We can provide referrals to trusted specialists.
