Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How do I know a ring is genuinely antique and not a reproduction?

Assessment involves examining hallmarks, the construction of the setting, the cut and character of the stones, the patina of the metal, and the stylistic details of the period in question. Reproductions typically show inconsistencies across these areas
— modern setting techniques applied to period designs, or stones cut with contemporary precision in supposedly Georgian pieces. Our team is trained to identify these details, and we document our assessment for every ring we sell.

Are antique engagement rings suitable for everyday wear?

Many are, and many of our clients wear them daily without issue. Suitability depends on the setting style and the stone. Bezel
and rubover settings are generally more robust than delicate claw or open-back settings. Rose-cut and old mine-cut
diamonds are well suited to daily wear. We will always advise honestly on whether a specific ring is appropriate for everyday
use or better suited to occasional wear before you purchase.

Can antique rings be resized?

This depends on the ring's construction, metal, and the extent of the resize required. Many rings can be adjusted by one or two sizes without compromising their integrity. Others — particularly eternity bands, rings with continuous shank engraving, or platinum pieces with delicate milgrain work — are more difficult to alter without risk. We will always be direct about what is and is not possible before purchase.

How should antique rings be cleaned and stored?

We recommend avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, and harsh chemicals for most antique rings, particularly those with organic stones or complex settings. A soft cloth and, where appropriate, a mild solution applied carefully is usually sufficient. Store rings individually — in a lined box or pouch — to prevent scratching. We are happy to give specific care advice for your piece at the time of sale.
