Carnelian Intaglio Ring in 21kt Yellow Gold

This rather unusual intaglio ring has been crafted from 21 karat yellow gold and mounted with an engraved piece of carnelian. The ring mount which imitates knotted rope centres on a rub-over set engraved piece of orange carnelian which has been carved with a figure, perhaps a warrior, and is possibly Roman in terms of its age. Whilst the ring mount is a new cast type shank it is very sympathetic to the Roman style and gives the illusion it is a piece from antiquity. Whilst we cannot be entirely sure of the origin of the carnelian intaglio we have a suspicion it may be Roman in origin due to the crudeness of the carving, and the figure depicted. The base of the shank seems to show a repair or evidence of a resize at some stage during its life, however has been fairly well executed. The surface of the intaglio has some scratches and abrasions, associated with age and wear. A rather beautiful dress ring for a man or woman who wants something that has a classical feel.
