A moulded stoneware jug in white glaze by Charles Meigh with a date mark for 1844. This jug is known by two names, the most common now being The Bacchanalian Dance. This name comes from the first scene which is a rendition of Nicholas Poussins' 17th century masterpiece 'Bacchanalian Revel Before a Herm of Pan'. It is quite faithfully reproduced given the limitations of the medium. It was also known in the period of manufacture (c1844-50) as the 'Rubens Jug', which is a rendition of Peter Paul Rubens 'Drunken Silenus' painting (later destroyed in 1945). Clay pad mark to the base with the makers name and date of Sept 30, 1844.
