Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How are Chinese marks and periods assessed for authenticity?

Reign marks on Chinese ceramics were commonly applied to pieces made in later periods as a mark of respect or aspiration rather than as a statement of age — a piece bearing a Kangxi mark may have been made in the 19th or even 20th century. We assess marks alongside the quality of the paste and glaze, the character of the decoration, and the form of the piece, all of which must be consistent with the stated period. We document our assessment clearly and do not misrepresent later pieces bearing earlier marks.

What types of Chinese art does the collection focus on?

The collection focuses on finer quality Chinese porcelain, jade, furniture and bronzes — areas where Chinese artistic tradition is particularly rich and where condition, period and quality of execution make a decisive difference to significance and value. We look for pieces at the upper end of the market, and have sourced works that have subsequently been acquired by museums and offered through the world's leading auction houses.

Is Chinese art subject to any import or export restrictions?

Certain categories of Chinese antiques are subject to cultural property regulations under Australian and international law. We comply fully with all relevant legislation, and any pieces in the collection that require specific documentation are sold with that documentation in place. We will always advise clearly on any restrictions before purchase.

How should Chinese ceramics, jade and bronzes be cared for?

Display ceramics away from direct sunlight and extremes of humidity. Handle jade and porcelain with clean hands or cotton gloves — oils from skin can affect surface quality over time. Bronze patina should generally be left undisturbed. Chinese furniture benefits from stable humidity conditions and appropriate wax for the timber type. We are happy to provide specific care guidance for any piece at the time of purchase.
