Antique Furniture Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How do you assess authenticity and provenance for antique furniture?

Each piece is evaluated for construction methods, tool marks, timber type and ageing, hardware, and the stylistic details of the period in question. We assess whether secondary timbers, backs, and drawer linings are consistent with the stated period, as these are areas where later alterations or reproductions are often revealed. Where provenance documentation is available, we provide it. Where it is not, we document our assessment of the piece on its own physical merits.

Do you offer delivery for antique furniture within Australia?

Yes. We can arrange delivery within Australia and will assist with international shipping where appropriate. Delivery is discussed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the size, fragility, and destination of each piece to ensure it arrives safely and correctly handled.

Can antique furniture be restored or repaired?

In many cases, yes — though the appropriate scope of any restoration depends on the piece, its condition, and what is historically consistent with it. We are always happy to advise on what restoration is appropriate and what would compromise the integrity or value of a piece. We can recommend trusted furniture conservators and restorers experienced in working with period pieces.

How should antique furniture be cared for in everyday use?

Antique furniture benefits from consistent conditions — avoid placing pieces near heat sources, in direct sunlight, or in rooms with significant humidity fluctuation. Use appropriate waxes or oils for the timber type, applied sparingly. We recommend against modern spray polishes, which can leave residues that affect the patina over time. We are always happy to provide care guidance specific to a piece.
