Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How is authenticity verified and how are hallmarks evaluated?

Each piece is assessed by our team through an examination of hallmarks, maker's marks, materials, construction methods, and the stylistic characteristics of the period in question. British, European, and Australian assay records are cross-referenced where relevant. For pieces attributed to known makers or houses, we draw on specialist knowledge and, where the attribution warrants it, consult external experts. Our research is treated as an ongoing process — if new information emerges after a piece has left the collection, we update our records and share that information with the buyer.

How do I care for antique and vintage jewellery?

Antique jewellery benefits from thoughtful handling and considered storage. We recommend keeping pieces away from harsh chemicals — including perfume, hand cream, and cleaning products — storing them individually to prevent surface contact, and cleaning only with methods appropriate to the specific metal and stone combination. Pieces incorporating organic materials such as pearl, coral, ivory, or tortoiseshell require particular attention, as do pieces with open-back settings or delicate enamel work. We are always happy to provide care guidance specific to a piece at the time of purchase, and to answer questions afterwards.

Can pieces be resized or repaired?

In many cases, yes — though suitability depends on the construction of the piece, the metal, the setting style, and the extent
of the alteration required. Some antique settings are not well suited to resizing; others can be adjusted by one or two sizes
without compromising their integrity or appearance. We will always be direct about what is possible, what risks are involved,
and what we would recommend. Where work is appropriate, we can refer you to trusted specialists with specific experience in antique and period jewellery.

Do watches come serviced and in working order?

Each watch in the collection is assessed for condition and mechanical function prior to sale. Where servicing has been
carried out, this is clearly noted in the item description. Pieces sold as collector or display items rather than working timepieces are documented as such. We are happy to discuss the condition, movement, and service history of any watch in detail before and after purchase.
