Why collect antique paintings through The Antique Guild
Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support
How is an antique painting assessed for authenticity and period?
We examine the support — canvas, panel, or copper — for period-consistency, assess the ground preparation and pigment palette against the stated period, and evaluate the execution and style of the work. The backs of paintings often provide as much information as the fronts: stretcher construction, old labels, auction stamps, and the character of the canvas ageing all contribute to a complete picture.
What does attribution mean in the context of antique paintings, and how confident should I be in it?
Attribution ranges from firm — a signed, documented work with a clear exhibition history — to tentative, where a work is consistent with the style of a period or school but cannot be firmly connected to a named artist. We document the basis of every attribution and are always transparent about the level of certainty involved. A tentative attribution to a school or period is not misrepresented as a firm attribution to a named artist.
Can antique paintings be cleaned or restored?
Yes — and skilled cleaning can reveal works that appear dull or overcleaned in a very different light. Surface cleaning, varnish removal, relining, and inpainting are all established conservation practices. We recommend that any restoration work is carried out by a qualified paintings conservator, and we can provide referrals. Any restoration carried out on pieces in the collection is documented.
How should antique paintings be hung and maintained?
Hang paintings on interior walls, away from exterior walls where temperature variation is greatest, and away from direct sunlight, fireplaces, and heating vents. Check hanging hardware annually. Dust frames gently with a soft brush — do not dust painted surfaces. Paintings that need cleaning should be assessed by a conservator before any work is attempted.
