Collection: Earrings

Every antique earring in this collection has been assessed by The Antique Guild's specialist team, examining metalwork, stone settings, and maker's marks to establish authenticity, period, and provenance. Where external specialist opinion has been sought, that is noted in the piece's documentation. Our research into each piece is an evolving process; records are updated when new information comes to light.

Jewellery & Watch Care, Provenance & Purchase Support

How do you ensure both pieces in a pair are original to each other?

Matching pairs are assessed for consistency in stone quality, cut, and size; the weight and finish of the metal; and the construction of the settings. Hallmarks on both pieces are compared. Where a pair has been re-assembled from period components, we document this clearly — we do not present assembled pairs as original without disclosure.

Can antique earring fittings be converted or changed?

In many cases, yes. Clip fittings can often be converted to posts, and screw backs can be updated for more comfortable everyday wear. Suitability depends on the construction and period of the piece, and we will always advise on what is possible without altering the character of the earring.

Are antique earrings wearable for everyday use?

Many are. Heavier drop earrings and those with delicate open settings are better suited to occasion wear. Studs, clips, and simpler drops in robust settings are generally fine for regular use. We will advise on the wearability of any specific pair before purchase.

How should antique earrings be stored and cleaned?

Store pairs together in a lined pouch or box to prevent loss and surface scratching. Clean with a soft cloth appropriate to the metal and stone — avoid immersion in cleaning solutions for pieces with organic materials, glued settings, or enamel work. We are happy to advise on care specific to your piece.
